The entire world reeled in shock.
This photo popped up everywhere.
All over the world, it felt like a bomb dropped. Even people who didn't understand Steve Jobs saw little memorials popping up, Facebook profiles changing, and the news crying in tears.
Then here you are. You are standing in front of thousands of people. Millions are watching. Billions will know what you do.
How do you respond?
Steve Jobs made himself so public. Steve Jobs made everyone on Earth think he was amazing. Steve Jobs changed the world. Steve Jobs did this. Steve Jobs did this. People are beginning to think Steve Jobs did everything.
Now, you are the CEO. What you say in this minute will be heard by over 1 billion people.
Most CEOs would crumble. They could never keep the public perception of the company alive. They could never renew investor confidence. Most CEOs would watch their company fall. The companies would never die off but they would become another generic company.
Not Apple.
This came out in 2013. It was one of hundreds of things like this. Everyone was saying Apple would die.
However, it has been 6 years since Steve Jobs died and Apple is the richest company in the world and seeing record sales.
- Every iteration of the iPhone continues to set “record sales”
- The Apple Watch has a 60% marketshare and is the #1 watch worldwide.
- iPad and MacBook sales are increasing despite their industries declining.
- Apple Music has hit 27 million users staying a constant #2 behind Spotify who is yet to be profitable.
- Apple Services are setting records.
And, despite what the tech media says, Apple continues to innovate with Apple Watch, AirPods, Face ID, Touch Bar (I saw a HP today that tried to copy the Touch Bar). (Remember: Not all innovations are good. But they are innovations).
In the end, Tim Cook was able to save Apple from the horrible perception that Steve Jobs’ death left. He is able to steer Apple towards record profits and record sales.
Under Cook, Apple has seen record success and has pleased even more customers than even Steve Jobs. Tim Cook has led Apple remarkably well and very few CEOs could do this.
