Anyone you have Direct Messaged in the past can now easily see when you last used the app. Here's how you can stop that from happening.

Prefer your Instagram addiction to be kept under wraps rather than revealed to people? You'll need to take action.

Instagram has a potentially embarrassing new feature that shows people the last time you used the app. The new activity status feature, which is enabled by default and shows up inside the Direct Messages section of the app, arrived as part of Instagram's latest update for iOS and Android, according to The Next Web.

To see what we mean, head over to your Direct Messages by clicking the paper airplane icon at the top right corner of your feed. Underneath each person's username will be a line showing the last time they were active. It might even show that users are "Active now."

In other words, you can now snoop on the Instagram activity of anyone with whom you have ever Direct Messaged – and they can easily see when you last used the app, too. That is, unless you disable the feature, which we suspect a lot of you will want to do.

To disable it, visit your profile and click the gear icon to open the Settings menu. Then, just scroll down until you see "Show Activity Status" and toggle this option off. When you disable this feature, people will no longer be able to see your activity status – phew! – but you won't be able to see anyone else's, either.

We can imagine scenarios where this feature might get people in trouble or cause hard feelings: If someone DMs you, for instance, and you don't respond right away, but they can see you're using the app, they might jump to the conclusion that you don't want to talk to them.

Meanwhile, Instagram is currently testing a feature that will snitch on you if you snap a screenshot of someone's Story, WABetaInfo reported this week. The first time you take a screenshot while watching a Story, you'll get a pass: Instagram will send you a notification, warning that "the next time you take a screenshot of a Story, the person who posted it will be notified."
