Outlook Express "The Message Could Not Be Deleted" Error

Question:Sometimes when I try to delete an email message (a received message) I get the following wording "The message could not be deleted." What do I do to solve this problem? I use Outlook Express.

Answer: This is most likely happening because your inbox has become corrupt. I would save any emails you want to keep and delete your inbox. Outlook Express will create a new inbox once you restart. Here is how you do it:

Make a folder called backup to move the emails you want to keep into and drag them over there. Then go to Tools, Options and then to the Maintenance tab and click the Store Folder button. This will show you the location of your mail files. Highlight the path in the box, right click it and choose copy. Then go to Start and Run and paste it in the box and click Ok and it will open up for mail file store location.

You will see files called Inbox.dbx, Outbox.dbx and so on. If you don't have the option to show hidden files and folders enabled as well as showing file extensions then you will need to change this first to see things properly.

Open My Computer and go to Tools, Folder Options and then the View tab. Make sure Show Hidden Files and Folders is checked and remove the checkmark for Hide Extensions for known file types. Then click on Apply to All folders and then click Ok. Now you can delete the file called Inbox.dbx. Make sure Outlook Express is closed before doing so. You can move the file to another location instead if you want to back it up just in case. Now when you open Outlook Express again it will make a new Inbox.dfx file and you can move the messages from your backup folder back into the inbox.
