CD\DVD Says Drive is Not Accessible When Changing Disks

Question:
Every time I change CDs in my drive and then try to open it, I get an error message that the drive is not accessible. How do I fix my computer so that I'm able to change CDs or DVDs?

Answer: This issue with your CDROM not refreshing in XP can be caused by third party CD\DVD recording software. If you have any installed on your computer and have the installation disks then I would try to uninstall them, reboot and see what happens.

You can also make sure that auto insert notification is enabled on your computer. You can check this by opening regedit from Start and Run and navigating to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom. Then make sure the AutoRun value data is set to 1.

This registry edit for a similar problem may also help in your case.

Another trick that Ive heard of before is to do this:
Eject the CDROM using the right click option in Windows Explorer on the CD drive itself. Then with no CD in the drive click on the CD drive again which should come up empty. Then try to put a new CD in the drive and see if it works.
