Certain Websites Won't Load
Question: Some web pages won't load after getting to a site while others will, on Mozilla or IE. The status bar says done but the page is blank. Refreshing doesn't work. The modem has been reset. I have run numerous scans, tests and troubleshooting but it’s still the same.
Answer. Your
problem is quite unique since it does the same on 2 different web
browsers. One thing you can do is to try and ping the website and see
if you get a response. Keep in mind that many sites block ping traffic
so if you don't get a response then it doesn't necessarily mean you
cant get to it. To do so open a command prompt by going to Start, Run
and typing in cmd and clicking Ok. Then type in ping www.websitename.com where website name is the name of the site you cant get to.
You can also try and use Microsoft's Port Query
program to test connectivity to a website. Web (HTTP) traffic goes
through port 80 so you can test the connection with this tool. Download,
install and run the program and where it says Enter destination IP or
FQDN to query enter www.websitename.com again and then check Manually input query ports and under Ports to query enter 80. Then for protocol choose TCP/IP.
You should also try to boot into Safe Mode
with Network support to see if it makes a difference. If you can get to
your websites this way then you may have something running on your
computer in normal mode such as spyware that is blocking these sites. If
that's the case be sure to do some spyware scans to see if you can clean it up.
You should also disable
any firewall software you have on your computer in case it is blocking
it. I've seen it where users of Norton Firewall will still have these
types of problems even if you disable it. If disabling it doesn't work
you can try to uninstall it and reboot to see if that makes a
difference. Just make sure you have your installation CD before doing
this so you can reinstall it.
Finally you can check the
hosts file on your computer to see if any entries are blocked. A text
file on a computer which maps host names to IP addresses. Some viruses
will put entries in the hosts file to prevent you from going to certain
websites. This file is located in your C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
folder. You can open it with Notepad to view it. Look for any entries
with 127.0.0.1 and then the name of the website you can't go to after
it.
