Keyboard Error Or No Keyboard Present Message on Bootup
Question: I have Windows2000 Professional on my desktop pc. I just installed a printer, using a downloaded installer program from the printer's manufacturer, because I bought the printer used and there was no installer software to go with it. Everything was OK at first but now my computer halts on bootup, displaying a message "keyboard error or no keyboard present". If I then shut the computer off and then turn it back on, it will sometimes then bootup OK. I may have to restart it several times to get it to bootup, or I might only have to restart it one time to get it to bootup. At other times it may bootup OK without halting or displaying keyboard error message. In other words, I don't have this bootup problem every time, but it happens more often than not. By the way the CMOS battery was just replaced about three months ago, so that's not the problem. Could it be that the installation software, along with other programs, is taking up too much space on the hard drive or just what do you think this could be, and how do I fix it? Also, when I finally do get the pc to bootup, or if I'm lucky, and it will bootup on the first try, the printer does work fine. I would certainly appreciate a timely answer of how to remedy this problem. So thank you for your time and concern. Its very unlikely that your printer driver is related to your bootup
problem. If you were having problems within Windows then it could be
related but your problem exists before Windows even loads. There could
be a problem with your PS2 keyboard port on your motherboard. That is
where you plug the keyboard into. This port is directly connected to the
motherboard and can go bad. You may also have a problem with the
keyboard itself or it may simply be loose so I would check that for sure
and try a different keyboard.
Another thing to try would be to get a USB keyboard to bypass the PS2 port in case its going bad. There is a possibility that you may still get the error and may be a setting in the BIOS to disable the PS2 keyboard port so the message doesn't show up.
The problem won't be hard drive space related. Printer drivers take up very little space. You can right click your C drive in My Computer and select Properties to see how much free space you have left. If you are under 500 MB of hard drive then its time to do some cleanup. I would recommend 1 GB free space if possible. You may also want to try CCleaner which is a free PC cleanup and optimizaiton tool.
