Power Surge Causes PC Issues
Question: Had a power outage Sunday with several power bumps. Now my clock reads the wrong time and my mouse cursor does not move. The computer also boots very slowly.
A. There
could have been many things that could have happened with a power
surge. You could have corrupted some Windows files causing the slowness
in booting and the clock problem as well as the mouse not moving. Then
again these problems can also be caused by hardware damage especially
to the motherboard since it keeps track of the time and the mouse
connects to it.
I would try a different
mouse or even a different type. If you have a PS2 mouse with the round
connector then you may want to try a USB mouse and vice versa. You can
go into your BIOS and check the date/time and change it there and see if it sticks in Windows.
Another more drastic option is to do a repair installation
of Windows which will reinstall Windows while leaving your programs and
files intact. That way it will replace any possible corrupt system
files. Be sure to do a backup first just in case.
Running the Windows System File Checker may also help repair some files.
Keep in mind that you may have some hardware damage which wont be able to be fixed via software.
