Reinstalling Windows 98 From CD

Question:
I am trying to install win 98 and when I put the cd in it says invalid system disk and replace the disk and press any key. When I do, nothing changes. I also need to reset my password on winxp.

Answer: I'm assuming you are trying to boot to the Windows 98 CD to install it? If this is the case you need to make sure of two things. First is that you have to make sure your computer is set to boot to the CDROM as the first boot device instead of the hard drive. Otherwise it will give you an error if there is no bootable partition on your hard drive. You can change this setting in your BIOS.

You also need to make sure your copy of Windows 98 is bootable. Not all of them are. You can find out simply by changing your boot order as mentioned above and see if it will boot from the CD. If not then you can boot from a Windows 98 boot disk. If you don't have one then you can download one from sites like this. http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm. Just make sure you download the right one depending on if your Windows 98 CD is the first edition, second edition (SE) or an OEM version.

To reset your password in Windows XP take a look at this link for help.

If you have forgotten your logon password and cant get into the computer then you can reset your administrator password by making a boot disk and following the instructions on this page. It is a little complicated so be careful.
