WhatsApp went down for users across the globe on Friday morning, causing irate users to flood to other forms of social media to complain.

The messaging service failed at around 8.30am, showing just a buffering wheel and a "connecting" message when users tried to get online.

#Whatsappdown became the top trending phrase on Twitter in the UK, while other countries hit included Russia, South Africa, parts of India, Malaysia, Spain and Germany, according to Downdetector.co.uk.
