Social Work - Job Description

Being a social worker is often a challenging, yet rewarding career. Social workers are responsible for helping individuals, families, and groups of people to cope with problems they’re facing to improve their patients’ lives. One aspect of this is teaching skills and developing mechanisms for patients to rely on to better their lives and experiences.

Social workers work with specific groups of clients including children, the elderly and people with mental health problems. Generally social workers specialise in either adult or child social care. The nature of the work varies according to setting.

Typical duties include:
  • assessing, counselling and offering advice to clients
  • arranging appropriate care, resources or benefits
  • liaising with relatives, colleagues and other professionals
  • report writing
  • budgetary and managerial administration
  • attending or contributing towards court cases
