‘Personal moments’ prioritised as Facebook overhauls news feed

Facebook will bump news stories and adverts down users’ news feeds to prioritise posts from friends and family instead, its co-founder Mark Zuckerberg said last night.

The 33-year-old chief executive said that the move, which will badly affect many publishers and could hit Facebook’s own bottom line, was intended to renew the social network’s focus on bringing people together, after users complained that posts from media and brands were crowding out personal moments.


He cited recent research by Facebook and academics indicating that time spent “passively” on social media was damaging for people’s mental health, while interacting proactively with friends was positive. He said that the company’s algorithms would now favour social posts over ads and news stories, and that any content should encourage meaningful…
